"Since thanksgiving keeps us sane and alive by connecting us to the source of our life and purpose, it makes sense that Paul instructs us to give thanks "in everything." Thanksgiving keeps us sane and alive." (from Strengthen Yourself in the Lord)
I love this quote; it's not easily digestible, but then again, much of what Jesus Himself says is not easily digestible either.
"If you don't forgive others, you will not be forgiven."
"They will know you're my disciples if you love one another."
"He who comes after me must take up his cross daily and follow me."
What I love most about the thanksgiving quote is that it's so very true: thanksgiving keeps us sane and alive. We have to give thanks TO someone, and obviously it's God, our ultimate source of everything!
I don't think David was too keen on giving thanks as he spent days hanging out in caves, hiding from the insane King Saul who was out to kill him...but David gave thanks!
I don't think Joseph was gung ho about giving thanks for being thrown into a pit by his own brothers, then into prison, accused unjustly, but from all outward fruit in his life, it seems he gave thanks.
Paul doesn't say 'give thanks FOR the situation', but rather "give thanks IN everything." Have you got a situation that is downright hard right now and the last thing you want to do is give thanks IN it? Try. See if the Lord is not able to meet you right there IN that situation, not necessarily to change it, but rather to change YOU!
