ICF this past Friday night

Pepus, Cathy, Kimberley, Sanyi, and Timi at the concert!

We didn't have our "traditional" meeting this past Friday night, and some of us were in one place and others in another!

Some people went to the park to play games...I was not with them so no pictures...

Others of us went to enjoy a fabulous concert at the Dom, a Catholic Cathedral here in Szeged. A friend of mine, Zoli, was playing with a string orchestra, Haydn's "The Last Words of Christ". It was fabulous and if I ever figure out how to put video on this blog, I'll get a small snippet on here.

Jobie Dobie weekend

Here is Joanna amidst the paper sorting in my living room!

LOADS of people from across the nation come to Szeged each year for this weekend!

No, Jo, you have enough shoes!

VERY traditional Hungarian music!

Typical Jo...on the phone! Heee hee hee!!! JK!

My sweet friend Joanna came to visit me last weekend and to help me organize! We also took some time to have some fun at the Szeged days bridge shopping...it sounds so much better in Hungarian: HIDI VASAR (pronounced: Hee-dee vaw-shar).

Jo and I are both making our way back across the big pond this summer to the country of our birth for a new season with the Lord!

An opinion....

I decided I wanted to go to the movies this evening. So, I went online to check out which films are in English.

NOTHING...........

NADA..............

Ok, I could go and watch a movie that has been dubbed into Hungarian. In fact, Hungarians are very proud of their abilities and skills at dubbing films into their language, and well they should be because this is a definite skill.

However, I don't like watching films in Hungarian, especially ones that are originally in English. Maybe this is simply a personal preference, but this blog is simply my opinion.

My opinion on the topic is this: I think it's great Hungarians have the talented people in their nation to dub films. However, I believe this nation, by dubbing films is, in a way, isolating itself and alienating itself in the entertainment industry from a much wider audience within its borders. In addition, neighboring countries do not dub foreign films into their native languages and their peoples' abilities to speak languages like English, German, Spanish, etc., are a far cry above those of many Hungarians. I believe, as do others, that dubbing films, Cartoon Network and every other channel legally possible to dub, has had negative affects on foreign language acquisition in this nation.

In addition, the entertainment industry here is losing out on making money off the thousands of foreigners living in this nation who would go to the movies if they had the opportunity to watch films in their native languages. I realize I do not live in Budapest, the capital, where I am sure there are plenty of films in their native languages showing, but I do live in a large city, with a very large population of foreigners (many university students included) who would love to spend an evening at the movies...and would probably buy popcorn, snacks and drinks, and maybe even visit the stores and spend money in the mall where a large theatre is located. So, there is money lost in many areas as a result of dubbing films.

I would like to know if the entertainment industry has seen a tremendous jump in sales of tickets at the movie theatres as a result of 99.9% of films being dubbed into Hungarian. If so, then hats off to this nation for an excellent economic move. However, if the increase is minimal, or in a negative direction as a result of losing large audiences of foreign viewers of films, then maybe they should rethink dubbing all the foreign films that come in. Or at least show both languages in a theatre, maybe at different times during the day or in two different rooms.

Anyway, just my opinion as I sit here at home, typing on my blog and offering this nation none of my economic input, instead of going out to the movies, buying a big bag of popcorn, candy and a drink and shopping at the mall before the show starts.

Movies dubbed in Hungarian....something I will NOT miss when I return to the U.S.

From a friend's blog...

Sasha’s Wheels!
// May 28th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Loux Family News
Several weeks ago we took Sasha to Children’s Mercy Hospital for his “seating” clinic. Multiple professionals examined Sasha and consulted with one another regarding what type of wheelchair would be best for him. When the session ended they announced their recommendation …. A $25,000 Permobil K450! (permobli.com). After they rushed me to the sidelines for oxygen and a pep talk I began to recover from the sticker shock. This chair will enable Sasha to lower himself to ground level, exit the chair, combat crawl around, re-enter the chair, raise himself to any height in a range of 5ft, and be completely independent in his movement. A company brought out a demo chair last week for Sasha to test drive, and boy did he love it. It was so amazing to see this little 6 yr old boy who has never been able to decide his own movement, suddenly have independence and mobility. He caught on to the concept of driving quite quickly and it wasn’t long before he was telling us to follow him! Few things have made his eyes as bright as they were that day. As I’ve thought about the cost of this chair, I’m convinced that this is exactly the kind of thing God would do … Take a little boy from a hopeless situation where he would be sedated and tethered and forgotten in some cold institution, rescue him, give him a family, and then give him the hottest set of wheels on the block! Our Papa in heaven is so extravagant …. and He’s not on a budget! We are believing God for the full provision for Sasha’s chair. Our insurance will cover $5,000 of the cost, and Southgate church in St. Louis (one of the best churches on the planet!) took up a $6000 offering for the chair (Thank you Southgate!). This leaves $14,000 to go. I promise you, in the next two months I will be blogging about how the Lord provided for this …. He never fails! Check out the video of Sasha preparing for his “NASCAR” debut and look at how excited he is. If the Lord stirs your heart regarding this, pass it around to people you know who may want to get in on making this precious boy’s dreams come true. Blessings!

Thoughts on openness

When I saw this flower, I first wanted to pass it by. But then I thought that it looked rather intriguing. Here was a flower, near many others which were fully open in bloom, but this one remained shut.
There's a reason for this....
I have no idea what that reason is....
However, whatever that reason is, I have to accept it. I cannot change the situation. Oh, I could walk over and 'force' the bloom open, but it would look strange, and I'll bet the flower would eventually die as a result of not being left to run its natural course.
Are we willing to let people whom God is working on stay in the Father's hand and allow Him to open them up in His perfect time?
Maybe they are not so 'beautiful' right now in some ways (not speaking physically here, but behaviorally), but can we let them unfold as God desires instead of what we think is the proper and right timing?

Ah, high school teaching....

Today was interesting. I asked a class to begin writing a 5-paragraph essay. Then I realized I'd not taught them how to do so. So, I began teaching them. As soon as I began, here's what unfolded from the mouths of my 11th grade bilingual students:

"Well, that's stupid!"

"Why would you start an essay that way?"

"That's not the way to write an essay!"

"Why does it have to be 5 paragraphs?"

Needless to say, I stopped teaching for a moment, and sort of unloaded. You see, some students in this particular class have been challenging this year. I know, I know, I will hear from people, "teenagers".....of course, I know that as I've been at this for 20 years. However, the incredible audacity of some students simply amazes me...maybe it shouldn't, but it does. (Can you tell it's the end of the year?)

Anyway, I tried to point out to them that them questioning me about how to write an essay is like me questioning one of the girls in my class who has won the european championship in dancing!!! It would be arrogant of me.

They settled down...and at the end of the lesson, one of the students thanked me for laying into the class like I did.

I love these kids...and I'm thankful for each one...and of course the reality hit me of how often I am like they were with me but with God! How often do I try to instruct Him on the best way to do things or let Him know what I know and that things should be done this way! Maybe not overtly, but I am just as cheeky as these students sometimes in my relationship with the Lord.

His ways are perfect...when will I learn shut my mouth and to trust Him to teach ME?

Goodbye surprise party!

Receiving gifts and flowers. Bela, in the blue shirt, organized the entire gathering at his home in Szoreg. He is a precious brother in the Lord who has been given great vision from God for this area of Hungary!

Botond Rozgonyi and Eszter Szabo give the message and prepare us to take communion together.

My friend, Donna George, who let everyone know we've known each other for 21 years!

My precious sister in the Lord and friend, Eszter!

I waled into this scene of smiles and singing!

As I walked through the gate into my friends' yard, I was greeted with a loud "SURPRISE!" from about 20 people...or more....who then began to sing a wonderful Hungarian blessing song! Of course I broke into tears...the first cry of many on Saturday, and was quite relieved to know I still have emotions!

I believe I cried about a litre of tears during the afternoon on Saturday as we all shared a time of worship, communion, sharing, gift-giving, lots of hugs and kisses, great food and fellowship! A small taste of heaven!

And so the "so longs" have begun. I was seriously beginning to wonder if tears would come at all, but on Saturday, I was thrilled to cry my eyes out and let myself feel the love, receive and give to people who have loved me for 9 or more years!

Never in my life have I known such overwhelming love from people. I will cherish this day forever! Thank you to all who made it so very special!

International Christian Fellowship - Szeged

We had our "last" official meeting for the 2008-2009 academic year last night at our regular meeting place. The next weeks we will enjoy the beautiful spring weather and have meetings in parks, by the river, etc.

We had a great time of worship, sharing, praying, and visioning for the future!!! I must say here that I am so very, very proud of Erik Ottosson, a fellow leader, who really stepped up to the plate last night and set out the challenge to those in ICF that we need to work together under the leadership of the Holy Spirit to see ICF move forward from September! And it was encouraging to see people, even last night, really taking up that charge and serving! Praise God!

I will be leaving Hungary and this fellowship with great confidence in the LORD, who will hold it together as everyone here seeks Him first!

Sorry, no pictures this week....

A great quote.....author unknown

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; rather we are spiritual beings having a human experience." (author unknown)

Airplanes and race cars

Yes, that plane is doing loopdy-loops!

And yes, he is flying upside down!

The Red Bull sponsored Formula 1 car!

It was kind of odd....all this fencing for one car that did some loops around the city...alas...............

It's a big week here in Szeged! Szeged Days! Last weekend, a Formula 1 car was in town and they blocked off a number of streets for a "demonstration".

High above, the Red Bull airplane was doing tricks.

Other events this week include lots of concerts, a wine festival, and the Hidi Vasar....they close down one bridge across the river and set up stands where people sell their goods, like hand made pottery and such things!

Taking it all in in a very special way this year!

Celebrate Jesus - The Book by Joanie Lipis

If you have a bit of time, read the very encouraging letter below from my friend Joanie Lipis, who recently published a book which many believe is going to be monumental!

One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts. I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, and shall sing of Your righteousness.

Spring 2009

The year was 1990 when I first preached from Psalm 145. I was about to graduate from seminary, and was praying for God’s direction. The leaders of two Jewish evangelism ministries had counseled me to allow God to raise a new ministry. They said that my age and experience would not render me “moldable” enough. Consequently, I asked God to confirm their counsel through the message of Psalm 145 and the response of the congregation. He did, and the rest, as they say, is history.

From that time onward, the above verses burned deeply into my heart. You see it on our ministry logo as well. Fundamentally, the driving passion of my life is to see radical sinners become radical worshippers.

I remember vividly how the Lord Jesus challenged me about my motivations for ministry. I was on my knees weeping over the condition of the lost. I sensed the voice of the Lord saying, “Do not weep for them…weep for Me!” From that moment onward I knew that God’s heart longed for loving worship from His redeemed children. His broken heart was my motivation for evangelism.

Somewhat later I sensed the Lord speaking an assignment to me. At the time I couldn’t understand when He said, “Feed My sheep.” How could I do both? How could I feed His sheep, which I understood to be the saved (both Jews and Gentiles), and reach the lost? They seemed to be contradictory assignments.

Until now…until Celebrate Jesus!

The reality of this truth crashed upon me last week.

The church is being fed as the “dots” of the Old and New Testaments are being connected.

Worship is being released as the church worships according to God’s calendar.

Culturally relevant opportunities are being created to reach the Jewish people.

At the same time, Celebrate Jesus! has already proven to be effective in evangelism to the Jewish people, particularly Israelis. Recently I was able to give the book to an Israeli sales person (at the mall – where else?). He was fascinated that I was an Israeli citizen and even more so that I had actually written a book. “Of course I’ll read it with an open heart AND tell all my friends.” That was before he saw the title of the book, but Israelis know the power of a promise!

Affirmations continue to confirm and affirm:

Pastor Cloyse: “I’ve been in full-time preaching ministry for 50 years, and finally the dots are connecting. Everyone who loves God should read this book

Pastor Dwight: “I’m almost through, and this book is superb. I’ve never understood the feasts, so I’ve ignored them in my teaching.”

Pastor David: “I’m so excited. The book is so easy to read, and I’m learning so much.”

Editor Tim: “This book has the potential of changing the way Christians worship.”

Joan B: “My church needs something to bring people together. New Moon events will be perfect to accomplish that.”

Mary: “Now I have a tool to use with my Jewish friends and neighbors.”

In other words, Celebrate Jesus! is a resource for evangelism and discipleship. Already two Bible studies based on the book have begun. Five young people from Europe received Jesus as their Savior after a home meeting in which I shared the message of Christ through the feasts.

To say that I’m surprised is an understatement! After years and tears of crying for renewed vision, structure and strategy (filling the earth is a big assignment), Celebrate Jesus! seems to be the answer. And let’s be completely real; this is nothing I could have planned and is waaaay out of my comfort zone and FAR BEYOND my ability. It is truly a “God thing”.

So now what?

I JUST WANT TO GO HOME (Israel)

Returning home as soon as possible is my heart’s desire and longing. God has repeatedly assured me that Israel is my home. Being an Israeli citizen has enabled me to be a witness to God’s faithfulness and the veracity of His word. Living among my people empowers the reality of being a Jewish follower of Jesus. What surprises me is this “sudden” yearning to live in Jerusalem…probably the most spiritually intense AND expensive city in the world.

Although the dollar has regained some strength against the shekel, rents and prices continue to escalate. At the same time, real estate prices have begun to drop, making this an excellent time to purchase. Another option is living in a communal situation for provision and protection. Some friends are seeing the wisdom, albeit challenge of such an option, but have been unable to find suitable rentals.

I sense I’ll be back home by the end of the year, but must wait until the cloud moves and God gives a clear signal that “NOW” is the time. I will probably return for a short season in August, to reconnect with friends and congregation, and to begin downsizing my belongings still in storage. Then I shall return to the States in the fall for an extended book tour before returning home “for good”.

War with Iran seems imminent, but then we’re always on the brink of war. The prophetic voice coming from the Land, is that our new government is in a holding pattern sizing up the new American administration. In His sovereignty, God is moving nations and people into alignment, that His will be done.

Marketing

Accomplishing the huge task of marketing the book, is another reason why my time in the States has been longer than I expected.

The challenges of self-publishing were immense. But nothing prepared me for the challenges of marketing – getting the book into people’s hands!

So the task at hand is building a firm electronic foundation (web sites, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (I think), and blogs), which will attract the attention of the internet community AND communicate with all known networks of friends and associates, for opportunities to minister. All appropriate ministries will be contacted (Messianic, family and home-school sites), as well as people in positions of influence. Marketing is a bit like evangelism. I must do the sowing and reaping, but God will bring in the harvest.

I keep reminding myself (no comma) that it’s not the book which is being promoted, but (eliminate “more importantly”) the message – celebrating Jesus through God’s feasts. There is great relevance, importance and significance of the feasts in the lives of all believers. To accomplish that will necessitate my doing some traveling. It appears probable that will take place in the fall – at the time of the holidays

Stateside “furlough”

Restoration & Release.

Relationships long ago severed are now being cleansed and restored under the Shepherd’s care. God is fulfilling His promises of Psalm 30:11:

You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness;

I admit the journey is often painful, as emotions long-ago buried are resurfacing. This morning the Spirit reminded me, “God cannot heal what He cannot have.”

At the same time, the relationship with my family has deteriorated to the breaking point. Mom’s mental capacity is failing quickly although her body remains in remarkable condition for a 90 year old. Sadly, all communication with my brother and his family has ceased. Mom finally confessed, “It’s all about your faith in Jesus.” I suspected that to be so, despite their protestations to the contrary.

Spiritually, this is a new day of intimacy and restoration of my first love.

Personal health. Physically, my health remains good and strong. I am grateful for a good friend and advisor, who is a brilliant and always-available family doctor.

Housing and transportation. I am still driving a red pick-up truck, a gift from dear friends. It’s definitely a “guy truck”, although I’m getting accustomed to sitting above the rest of traffic. Because of the truck’s thirst for gas, I’m unable to take the extended road trips I long for (and need, to market the book.). Housing continues to be an adventure, as I am now in the 4th home in 6 months, excluding the months on the road to Colorado and California! Living with others has been a continual blessing, as I am greatly enjoying being part of family life
Novea ministries. It has been my desire to have a more “hands on” Board. Thus, we are in a season of prayer and recruiting of God’s men and women for a new Board of Directors. As the ministry expands its influence, there is the need for a larger team, for the practical running of the ministry. Specifically we need:

Media coordinator

Probably the #1 need is a communication and scheduling coordinator. As we face a national book/speaking tour, we need someone to take on this tremendously important task. God has someone “out there” whom He has gifted and appointed for this ministry. To that person, this daunting task would be a blessing.

If you know of anyone who might be interested, we can work out specific job descriptions.

Prayer Points

Team. Please pray for the existing team (names available on request), and for those God has appointed and anointed.

Equipment. With the increasing reliance on the internet, graphics, and media, my existing computer is insufficient. I’m asking God to supply:

A new lap top
Video camera
Photo Shop software
External hard drive
Translations. To reach the Jewish people with the message of Jesus in the Feasts, we need translations of Celebrate Jesus! into Russian, Spanish and Hebrew. Pray also for translations into Korean, German, and Japanese.

Support. God’s economy is different than the world’s. By the 4th plague, God had established a difference between Israel and Egypt. Therefore the Board is currently developing a new budget to cover expected needs in Israel, as well as the increasing demands of the ministry.

Opportunities to minister. At the moment, my schedule is very empty. Please pray for opportunities over the summer months, and as we begin to coordinate a fall speaking/book tour. The areas we are considering are: Texas, Florida, Georgia, Boston, Colorado, California, Oregon, and Canada.

Permanent housing in Israel. God’s promise to the Jewish people is to take and possess the Land. Renting is NOT possessing. A permanent ministry house will provide stability and refuge during these times of confusion and upheaval.

I wish thanking you personally were possible. Your love, prayers, and notes of encouragement mean so much to me. Being in the “Diaspora” (outside of Israel) often feels like punishment or discipline, but God’s goodness, shown through you, has made the difference. Please continue to hold me before the Throne of Grace that I might fulfill all His plans and purposes for this season and the next. These are exciting times and we all need to keep on keeping on.

All for the glory of Jesus and the salvation of Israel

Worship time in Kubekhaza

This is my sweetie, Regina!

Dear friends, Bela and Bea, Zoli and Andi.

Kubekhaza ministry

Fellow missionary Rob George and his Hungarian partners in Szoreg and Kubekhaza organized a men's retreat this past weekend in Kubekhaza, near Szeged. The women were invited to come on Saturday afternoon to enjoy worship and Hungarian goulash and fellowship. The setting, as you can see, was beautiful! The men were encouraged, inspired and are excited to see God move even more in this area and nation!

ICF this past Friday

Small group prayer time!

Perusing the book table!

Smiling for the camera!

Chocolate chip cookies were devoured in about 5 min.

Fellowship time is sweet!

Once again, we had a wonderful time of worship, led by Erik and Chuuks, and a great time of teaching, discussion and small-group prayer at ICF! The focal passage was from Daniel and the theme was about testing, obedience and God's faithfulness and blessings!

From C.S. Lewis

"I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun, not just because I see it, but because by it I can see everything else." (C.S. Lewis)

Father, help us to look at EVERYTHING around us from Your perspective!

The past couple of days have been interesting. I've seen God work in ways I've never seen Him work before.

I was presented with a situation, which upon first glance, made me step back and wonder. That 'wonder' turned to questions, which turned to thinking, processing, praying, conferring, reading, more praying, writing, and finally, a clear breaking in by the Holy Spirit.

I knew what God was asking me to do, and I knew it was a test, and I knew that if I didn't pass this test that I would face a similar test again, and again, and again, until I passed. It was a challenging test, but when I got the answer from God, I knew what needed to be done. Doing it, was the next step in the test.

However, the surprising work of God came when the 'situation' I was facing completely changed. The test was before me...and I was so excited to pass! However, God surprised me. You see, without any words spoken, any human discussion, God stepped in on the other side of the equation and did pretty much the same thing on that side that He did with me.

I stand amazed, but I shouldn't be probably, at how the Holy Spirit spoke clearly in a situation where no words were spoken regarding the situation. And I believe with ALL my heart that because the one on the other side of the situation passed his test, and I on my side of the situation passed my test, that blessings in abundance are headed our way, even beyond the blessings we've immediately received in the process.

I have learned MUCH through this: stop, pray, listen, read, pray, listen, obey.

45 second microwave cake???

Well, the pictures are out of order but oh well! Here's the birthday girl, Barb, enjoying her microwave cake! "It's GOOD!"

Yes, it actually cooked in 40 seconds!!!

Larisa and Barb making the cakes!

Mini-microwave cakes! And cornbread muffins with sparkly, relighting candles!

Yes, indeedy, only in the U.S.A. can you get this kind of quick food!

Only in America could you find something like this....I saw these when I was in the U.S. at Christmas time....they are mini cakes that you add water to the mix and pop in the microwave for 30-45 seconds and they are cooked. "Fresh" cake! Well, my friends Barb (who turned 35 yesterday) and Larisa and I all laughed as we made these mini cakes for her birthday! Then the laughter increased as the candles I put on her cake began to spark, and we soon realized they are those re-lighting ones...I seriously did NOT know beforehand...and they even relit in the kitchen sink!

Then of course we ate the cake, and popcorn and cornbread muffins and watched our FAVORITE film together, "Miss Congeniality", and as each scene started, one of us would say, "Oh, this scene is great!" and so we were laughing all evening!

What a blessed and wonderful way to spend an evening, with GOOD friends, laughing and celebrating life!

Birthdays and friends

Today is one of my closest friends' birthdays! She and another friend are coming over this evening to watch our favorite film: Miss Congeniality! Doesn't matter that we've seen it probably 10 times. I baked some cupcakes for her and we'll sing, and just hang out...

Precious times with friends....I'm counting the days now, cherishing every moment that I'm here...

Worship evening at ICF

Erik and Chuuks lead-off the evening of worship! Over 100 people from many different churches came together!

Amazing blessings follow this worship team from the Baptist church!

New Song fellowship's worship team.

Our Nigerian friends capped off the evening with acapella worship!

God never ceases to amaze me! Our fellowship hosted a worship evening tonight, and over 100 people showed up to worship the Lord together! We had worship teams from 4 different fellowships/churches (Yes, you read correctly, from different churches, different denominations!!!) lead us in worship in both English and Hungarian!

There was a sweet presence of the Lord throughout the evening, and even at the end, no one really wanted to leave. I pray the Lord calls His people together again to lift up HIS name in this nation!

A good quotation....

I "borrowed" the following from my friends' blog:

I would rather believe for everything and get half; than believe for nothing and get it all.
I want this to be true in every area of my life, looking to the Source of everything for everything!

Graduation

Georgeous flowers are the order of the day at Hungarian graduations!

I will miss this dear friend and colleague...she loves Jesus!

Two wonderful friends, Mari and Kati, whom I will sorely miss!

Seniors walk through the school 'one last time'!

And this is just a small taste of the number of flowers students receive!
Graduation is a very special day in Hungary! Students are dressed to a "T" and parents, relatives and friends all come to celebrate! It will always amaze me that seniors go through graduation BEFORE taking final exams. :-)

Interesting Joke.....

A Hungarian friend of mine told me this joke the other day. I retold it to my Hungarian colleagues and all of them agreed it is very accurate. Pondering this joke, I am now understanding Hungary and Hungarians more than I ever have before. So, here's the joke:

An American, a Russian and a Hungarian each had a cow. The American's cow died. God asked the American, "What would you like since your cow has died?" The American responded: "I would like 10 more cows because I want to start a business."

The Russian's cow died. God asked the Russian, "What would you like since your cow has died?" The Russian responded: "I would like two cows in order to have milk and meat to feed my family."

The Hungarian's cow died. God asked the Hungarian, "What would you like since your cow has died?" The Hungarian responded: "I want my neighbor's cow to die too!"

Bless those who curse you; do good to those who hate you; if your enemy takes your cloak, give him your tunic as well; if someone hits you on one cheek, turn the other to him as well.
